Bienvenidos to Finanzas Pa' Mi Gente, the Inspiration Behind the Business

Hola, mi gente, and welcome to the Finanzas Pa' Mi Gente blog! I'm Martha, an accountant, entrepreneur, educator, and the founder of Finanzas Pa' Mi Gente. I'm so happy you’re here!

Before we dive into cash flow, pricing, taxes, and all the other topics we'll explore together, I want to share the story, inspiration, and why behind my business.

It Started at My Mom's Sewing Machine

I grew up in Mexico as one of six kids raised by a single, hardworking mom. My mother was a dressmaker who worked from home, and people loved her creations. She made beautiful clothes, and her clients kept coming back because her work was that good.

She worked all day and often late into the night at her Singer sewing machine. Despite her long hours, she still made sure we felt loved, always had food on the table and a roof over our heads. When I think about hard work, I think about her.

What I didn't understand as a kid, and what I see so clearly now, is that her talent and effort were never the problem. Her prices were very low, and she was scared to raise them. She never received any financial education growing up, so no one ever taught her how to save, invest, or plan for retirement. Because she worked for herself, she didn't have health insurance, benefits, or a retirement plan to fall back on.

After about 50 years of sewing, her body made the decision for her. Her eyesight had declined too much to keep working, and all those years at the machine had taken a toll on her hands and back. Her health forced her into retirement, and after a lifetime of hard work, she found herself without income, health insurance, or a pension to support her.

Seeing the Same Story in My Clients

My mom's story stayed with me as I built my career in accounting. Over the years, I've worked with so many Hispanic business owners who remind me of her, people who are passionate, hardworking, and determined to succeed, yet making big financial decisions without really understanding their cash flow, profit, taxes, or long-term plan.

Many of them walk into our first meeting feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and a little embarrassed that their finances are a complete mess. Once we look at the numbers together, things are usually much better than they feared. What they've been missing is someone who can explain what those numbers mean in a way that actually makes sense.

That's when I realized the traditional accounting model wasn't enough. Preparing someone's taxes once a year only reacts to what already happened, and my clients needed more. They needed someone to teach them how their business finances work, how to price with confidence, how to pay themselves what they're worth, and how to turn their hard work into a legacy.

What "Finanzas Pa' Mi Gente" Means

My why behind the business is all in its name, Finanzas Pa' Mi Gente. Financial education for Hispanic entrepreneurs. So much of traditional financial education feels formal, intimidating, and disconnected from the realities of our community. I wanted a name that felt familiar and welcoming from the very first word, so that when you hear it, you think, "Finally, this was made for people like me."

This is business finance that speaks your language, both literally and culturally. Everything we create is available in English and Spanish, and it's built with an understanding of the family responsibilities, cultural values, and beliefs about money that shape how so many of us run our businesses.
